Talking Therapies

As well as our range of courses on offer, we may also

suggest that you would benefit from one of our

talking therapies.

Our team of Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners, Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapists and Counsellors can offer therapy depending on your individual circumstances.

You won’t be able to request a specific type of treatment before your initial assessment with us, but we will discuss the different options we think would work best for you.

Below you will find a bit more information on the different types of talking therapy we offer.

If you would like to book in an assessment with one of our Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners to talk about how you are feeling and look at the best options for you, please fill in our referral form or call us on 0114 226 4380.

Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner

Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) can provide an assessment appointment to help you make an informed choice on the right therapy for you.

They can make sure you have the right information and helpful techniques to manage and overcome stress, anxiety and depression. A PWP will work alongside you to use a proven approach called ‘guided self-help.’ This includes setting realistic goals, looking at how you spend your time and how this can impact on your mood, learning new ways to solve difficult problems, and learning how to overcome and face fears. They can also help you learn ways to challenge and overcome negative thinking.

Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners can offer you up to six sessions, with each session lasting up to 30 minutes. During these sessions we will ask you to complete some questions for us to monitor your progress.

Our PWPs are trained to work with anxiety and depression with several long-term health conditions.

Complete our online referral form or call us on 0114 226 4380 to arrange an assessment appointment.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is based on a key idea: what we think and what we do affects the way we feel.

It has been shown to be effective for a wide range of emotional difficulties including low mood and anxiety disorders. CBT is about finding out what is keeping us 'stuck' and making changes in our thinking and actions so that we can improve the way we feel.

A Cognitive Behavioural Therapist will help you to explore and understand difficulties by looking at the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Your therapist will work with you to develop a shared understanding of the difficulties you want to work on.

You can then plan together your goals for therapy and the tools you can use to make changes. CBT is a collaborative therapy and needs your active participation to be helpful.

You need to be prepared to work between sessions, to make changes and to practice using the tools you have learned in day-to-day life. The aim of CBT is for you to learn to be 'your own therapist' so that you can continue to look after your wellbeing long after the sessions have finished

Counselling for Depression

People can use 'counselling' as a term to collectively describe a range of talking therapies. In Sheffield Talking Therapies we offer specific evidence-based counselling therapies to treat depression.

There are different types of counselling treatments for both individuals and couples. If counselling is considered to be helpful, following an assessment with a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, you will be able to access the right type of counselling for you.

Depression can be caused by many different life events and situations including loss, change, relationship difficulties and early life experiences.

Counselling tends to focus on how people feel emotionally, allowing an opportunity to reflect on feelings and experiences and have them validated.
